چکیده

The intermediate polar HT Cam is unusual in that it shows no evidence for dense absorption in its spectrum. We analyse an XMM-Newton observation of this star, which confirms the absence of absorption and shows that the X-ray spin-pulse is energy independent. The modulation arises solely from occultation effects and can be reproduced by a simple geometrical model in which the lower accretion footprint is fainter than the upper one. We suggest that the lack of opacity in the accretion columns of HT Cam, and also of EX Hya and V1025 Cen, results from a low accretion rate owing to their being below the cataclysmic variable period gap.

The changing accretion states of the intermediate polar MU Camelopardalis

Aims. We study the timing and spectral properties of the intermediate polar MU Camelopardalis (1RXS J062518.2+733433) to determine the accretion modes and the accretion geometry from multi-wavelength, multi-epoch observational data. Methods. Light curves in different observed energy ranges (optical, UV, X-ray) are extracted. The timescales of variability in these light curves are determined usi...

The periods of the intermediate polar RX J0153.3+7446

We present the first optical photometry of the counterpart to the candidate intermediate polar RX J0153.3+7446. This reveals an optical pulse period of 2333± 5 s. Reanalysis of the previously published ROSAT X-ray data reveals that the true X-ray pulse period is probably 1974± 30 s, rather than the 1414 s previously reported. Given that the previously noted orbital period of the system is 3.94 ...

Why does the intermediate polar V 405 Aurigae show a double - peaked spin pulse ?

V405 Aurigae is an intermediate polar showing a double-peaked pulsation in soft X-rays and a single-peaked pulsation in harder X-rays. From XMM-Newton observations we find that the soft band is dominated by blackbody emission from the heated white-dwarf surface. Such emission is at a maximum when either magnetic pole points towards us, explaining the double-peaked pulsation. The symmetry of the...

RXTE confirmation of the intermediate polar status of IGR J15094--6649

Aims. We aim to establish the X-ray properties of the intermediate polar candidate IGR J15094–6649 and therefore confirm its inclusion into the class. Methods. 42 856 s of X-ray data from RXTE was analysed. Frequency analysis was used to constrain temporal variations and spectral analysis used to characterise the emission and absorption properties. Results. A spin period of 809.7 ± 0.6 s is pre...
